Everything to Know about Contamination in Cosmetic Products in Indonesia

Based on the data issued by the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan/BPOM), there have been around 55,000 new cosmetic products registered as of 2019. That is, with the large number of cosmetic products and users in Indonesia, supervision of cosmetic safety has become more strict. However, the problem is, some illegal cosmetics escaped such supervision and have been widely circulated in Indonesia. These illegal cosmetics might contain contaminants that could harm our skin.

Contamination in Cosmetic Products in Indonesia

Contaminants is substances contained inside the cosmetics, which are accidental and unavoidable from raw material processing, storage and /or transport process.

In accordance with BPOM Regulation No. 12 Year 2019, there are 3 kinds of contamination in cosmetics, as explained below:

  • Microbial contamination which derives from microbes that can harm and endanger human health.
  • Heavy metal contamination which appears in the form of metallic and metalloid chemical elements, characterized with its high atomic weight and specific gravity, which is toxic for individual.
  • Chemical contamination which originates from chemical elements or compounds that can harm and endanger human health.

 

Cosmetic contamination test should be conducted at accredited laboratory and examined based on validated or verified analytical methods.

Before you can distribute your products in Indonesia, you will have to register your product with the BPOM (National Agency of Food and Drugs) and MoH (Ministry of Health). Only an Indonesian legal entity can register the product.
